About Us
Springfield State Hospital: Historical Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the rich history of the historic hospital in Sykesville, Maryland. Under the direction of the hospital’s designated historian, Brennan VanderVeer, our mission is to rekindle the deep connection that once existed between the institution and the community. Through tours, events, and educational programs, we strive to strengthen that bond once again and ensure that the legacy of Springfield—along with the stories of its patients and staff—is never forgotten.
When Springfield was first established, only a few structures already stood on the property. One of these was the Patterson Mansion, which dated back to the late 1700s when the land served as a large plantation. The mansion was originally the home of the Patterson family but was later repurposed as the superintendent’s residence after the hospital opened. In 1912, the original mansion was destroyed by fire, and a new residence for the superintendent was subsequently built on the same site.
The Men’s Group residential quad at Springfield was the first phase of construction undertaken after the property became a hospital. Comprising an administration building and three residential cottages—connected by a covered corridor—the quad was completed and occupied in 1898. Built according to the innovative "Cottage Plan," these structures helped earn Springfield the distinction of a "model institution" and served as a blueprint for the design of future asylums.
The Administration Building of the Men’s Group was the first hospital building completed at Springfield. Construction began in 1896 and was finished in 1898. For many of the hospital’s early years, it served as the public face of Springfield.
